Durga Puja

Durga Puja

The single most popularly celebrated puja of Kolkata is Durga Puja. People of West Bengal eagerly await the days when Durga Puja starts and the celebrations go on for 10 days. It is a puja where people are decked out in their best outfits- traditional or otherwise, and go visit the pandals which are made in various themes along with the idol, chandeliers and décor.

Goddess Durga stands for many things, but her most famed 9 forms are prayed to during these days, also known as Navratri Puja. Navratri Puja literally translates to nine nights of worship. Devotees of Goddess Durga keep a fast for 9 days, eating only sattvik food, water and milk.

After the 10 days are over, the idols are submerged in water bodies after taking them out on a grand procession with music and dance. On this day, married women play Sindoor Khela with each other to increase their marital bliss.
