Since the situation can happen with anyone, the DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) has issued strict guidelines for the airlines to protect the rights of the passengers. After the updated guidelines in 2016, passengers can claim a better compensation amount from the airlines in case they face situations like denied boarding or flight cancellation.

Passenger Rights For Flight Cancellations

While rare, airlines do cancel flights for various operational reasons. Airlines are supposed to inform passengers about canceling flights at least 2 weeks before the scheduled departure date of the flight.

If you face a situation with your canceled flight, you have 2 options to choose from. You can either accept the change and get a seat on another flight of the same airline, or choose to get a full refund of the booking fare. The airline is responsible for informing the passengers at least 24 hours beforehand.

If the airline has not informed the passenger, or if the passenger misses the connecting flight booked under the same ticket number due to the flight cancellation, the airline will pay a compensation ranging from Rs. 5000 to Rs. 10,000 to the passenger.

If the passenger paid for the booking in cash, the airlines provide them the refund instantly. If the passenger made their payment by credit / debit card, the airline will refund the entire price within 7 days of refund initiation to the source account.

Conceding that the passenger has booked their flight tickets via a travel provider or an agent, the refund amount will have taxes deducted from it along with service charge(s). You can use the refund sum to get another ticket to your destination on a later date, according to your convenience. For example if your flight to Delhi stands cancelled, you can get the refund amount and book last minute flight deals on Tripbeam.

Passenger Rights For Denied Boarding

The DGCA has stern guidelines for when this situation happens to protect the rights of the fliers. If the airlines deny boarding to fliers even when they have a valid ticket, the airline is responsible for getting them seated on an alternate flight, scheduled not more than 1 hour of the original departure of the scheduled flight.

Should the airline fail to do so, the airline is liable for arranging a seat on a flight within 24 hours of the original scheduled flight departure time along with a compensation of Rs. 10,000. If the next scheduled flight is more than 24 hours later than the original scheduled flight departure time along with a compensation of Rs. 20,000.
